Use of Space and Letting Go of Furniture

Having just moved a month ago, I’ve been very aware of how my old furniture fits (or doesn’t fit) in my new apartment. At this point, I’m definitely all moved in; you might even say that I’ve been moved in for the past 3.5 weeks. It did not take me long to set up and organize my new space (phew! since I’m an organizer and all…). But one thing that I did notice is that my sofa and coffee table fit beautifully in the new space as does my new platform bed. I had ordered a smaller bed from the one that I had in my last apartment so that I’d have more room in my new bedroom for other furniture and just for ease of moving around. I had gone to the apartment before the actual move date to measure all of the walls so that I’d know before I moved whether my furniture would fit well.

I know that many of you might struggle with parting ways with old furniture that you love or that you may have spent a lot of money on, but before your next move, think about your use of space. Take the time to measure your new home to see whether your old furniture will really fit nicely into your new space. And if you realize that it won’t, then you can sell or donate it before you move. It’ll be less to move, and most likely less money too since your movers won’t have as much to move! Maybe they could use a smaller truck too.

If you do take furniture that just doesn’t work in your new space, you’ll forever be annoyed with it, and you’ll be wishing that you only brought those pieces that fit well.
