Your “Buying” Criteria

How do you buy stuff? Do you have criteria when you go to buy something? Or do you just buy things as you feel like it? Do you think before buying? If so, what goes through your mind?

In recent years, I’ve gotten better at thinking carefully about why I buy something before buying it. I have certain criteria that I consider before I make the purchase. Here are some of the questions I ask myself before making a purchase:

  1. Is it a quality item? For example, if it’s clothing, is it well-made, sustainable, and classic, and does it fit my style? I’m willing to pay more for a quality piece of clothing, furniture, art, etc. I’m not into fast fashion or cheaply-made furniture.
  2. Do I really need this item? Am I shopping because I’m bored? Am I shopping to fill another need? Sometimes we shop to get out of doing something else. Some of my clients have told me that they shop when they are depressed. Really thinking carefully about whether we need the item is important. You don’t want to get buyer’s remorse.
  3. Do I have space for this item? This is especially true with regard to furniture or any kitchen appliance especially if you need to put it on your counter!
  4. Is this a multi-use item? This is key for kitchen items. Are you buying every type of gadget for your kitchen? Multi-use items are great in kitchens especially if you don’t have a lot of space.
  5. Am I buying from a small, local business? I like to support the businesses in my community. I like keeping the money local. It’s more personal, plus you usually get better service, and you just might be supporting your neighbor!

These are just some of the criteria that I’ve considered over the years when buying things. You might want to come up with your own list! It’ll save you money and time in the long run!
